July 17th marks the anniversary of my lung transplant—my “lungiversary.” Every year at this time, I reflect on the surgery and the arduous journey that followed. This milestone is more than just a personal victory; it holds powerful lessons for anyone striving to succeed in business.

Imagine waking up with new lungs. It’s not an instant fix where you suddenly breathe deeply and jog around. The reality is far more gruelling. You have to relearn how to breathe, build your strength from a point where you can barely hold yourself up, and endure pain as your body adjusts. This is the harsh truth: the path to recovery is fraught with difficulties, just like the path to business success.

The Gruelling Path to Recovery

Every day, the physiotherapists pushed me to move. First, it was a lap around my room, then the ward. Gradually, I had to increase my distance. Seven days post-transplant, you’re expected to walk outside the hospital, down a slight hill, and back up without collapsing. This wasn’t just a physical challenge; it was a test of willpower and determination.

During my stay, I met a woman who had her transplant two months before me. Despite the time, she was still in the hospital. Why? Because she refused to push herself. As soon as she felt sore or tired, she stopped. Consequently, she hadn’t even left the ward.

The physiotherapists were at their wits’ end. They couldn’t simply yell at her; it made things worse. Then, the surgeon who operated on her stepped in and asked a simple but profound question: “Where do you want to be at Christmas?”

She wanted to be in Cairns with her family, enjoying a wonderful Christmas lunch—a reunion she hadn’t had in years due to her health. The surgeon laid it out clearly: if she continued as she was, she’d either still be in the hospital or, worse, dead. Her body wouldn’t be strong enough to recover.

Setting Goals and Pushing Limits

The surgeon’s advice was straightforward: whenever it hurt, or she felt tired, she should think about her goal—Christmas with her family. Every step, every push should be driven by that vision. By the time I left the hospital, she was walking up and down the hill with fierce determination in her eyes.

This story is a powerful metaphor for running a business. Starting and growing a business is never easy. It can be daunting, painful, and exhausting. There are moments when you might feel like giving up. But success requires pushing beyond your comfort zone, setting clear goals, and relentlessly pursuing them.

Applying the Lessons to Business

Just like in recovery, you need to set clear, motivating goals for your business. Ask yourself:

  • Where do you want your business to be at the end of the year?
  • Where do you see it in five years?
  • What about ten years?

Are you on track to achieve those goals? If the answer is no, it’s time to reassess and refocus.

Whenever you face a challenge or feel unmotivated, keep your goals in mind. They should be the driving force behind every extra phone call, every networking event, every social media post. Step outside your comfort zone with your goals wrapped around you like a security blanket, propelling you forward.

Taking Action and Embracing Support

In business, just as in recovery, progress often comes in small, incremental steps. Each step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal. And remember, even if you stumble, you’ve still moved further than before. Embrace those small victories and learn from the setbacks.

Moreover, you’re not alone on this journey. Just as I had a team of physiotherapists supporting me, you have a network of peers, mentors, and colleagues. In our Unconventionalists community, we’re here to help you get back up and encourage you to keep going. Leverage this support system; don’t hesitate to ask for help or share your struggles.

Consistency and Perseverance

Consistency is key. Regularly check in on your progress towards your goals. Are your daily actions aligning with your long-term vision? If not, make the necessary adjustments. Just as I had to consistently push myself physically, you need to consistently push your business efforts.

Perseverance is crucial. There will be tough days when everything seems to go wrong. During those times, remind yourself why you started. Reconnect with your passion and vision. Visualise the end result—the success you’re striving for. Let that vision reignite your determination and drive.

Celebrating Milestones

Finally, celebrate your milestones, no matter how small. Each achievement is a testament to your hard work and perseverance. Celebrating these moments keeps you motivated and reminds you of the progress you’ve made.

Conclusion: Embrace the Journey

My lungiversary is a reminder of the incredible power of determination, goal-setting, and support. These principles are just as vital in business as they are in personal recovery. By embracing these lessons, you can overcome the challenges of running a business and achieve your goals.

So, where do you want to be? Set your sights on your destination, and let that vision guide you through the hard times. Push yourself, seek support, and celebrate your progress. With determination and perseverance, you’ll get there.

The journey is tough, but the rewards are worth it. Let’s keep moving forward together.
