Last year, before I had officially launched Dare 2 Sell, a friend came to me seeking advice on his copywriting business. He was struggling to attract customers despite his clients loving his work. His website was professional, he had glowing reviews, and his copy was exceptional. To me, there was no reason he shouldn’t have been booked out for months in advance.

I was stumped until I looked into what other copywriters in his niche were charging. Almost double what he was.

This revelation was a turning point for my friend and highlighted an important lesson for anyone in business: pricing matters. Here are some key insights from that experience:

Understanding Your Market Value

One of the most common mistakes businesses make is underpricing their services or products. This can stem from a lack of confidence, fear of losing potential customers, or simply not knowing what the market rate is. However, setting your prices too low can have several negative consequences:

Perceived Value: Customers often associate price with quality. If your prices are significantly lower than your competitors, potential clients might assume your services are inferior.

Sustainability: Low prices can lead to unsustainable business practices. You might struggle to cover your costs, invest in growth, or even pay yourself a fair wage.

Attracting the Wrong Clients: Lower prices can attract clients who are only looking for a bargain. These clients might not value your work as much and could be more demanding or difficult to satisfy.

Conducting Market Research

To avoid underpricing, it’s crucial to conduct thorough market research:

Identify Competitors: Look at other businesses in your niche. What are they charging? What services do they offer for that price?

Evaluate Your Unique Selling Points (USPs): Determine what sets you apart from your competitors. Are you offering a higher quality service? Do you have more experience or specialised skills? Use this to justify your pricing.

Adjust Accordingly: If you find that you’re significantly underpriced, consider adjusting your rates. This doesn’t have to be a sudden increase; you can gradually raise your prices while communicating the added value to your clients.

Communicating Value

Raising your prices can be daunting, especially if you’re worried about losing clients. However, it’s essential to communicate the value behind your services:

Showcase Your Work: Highlight your best projects, client testimonials, and any unique methodologies you use.

Educate Your Clients: Explain why your services are worth the investment. This could be through blog posts, case studies, or even one-on-one discussions.

Offer Packages: Create tiered service packages that cater to different budgets. This way, clients can choose the level of service that best suits their needs while still understanding the value of your higher-priced offerings.

Building Confidence

Ultimately, pricing your services correctly requires confidence. Believe in the value you provide and don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth. Here’s what my friend did:

He Raised His Prices: He adjusted his rates to be more in line with market standards. Initially, he was nervous about how clients would react, but he soon found that clients were still willing to pay for his exceptional work.

He Refined His Branding: He updated his website and marketing materials to reflect the higher value of his services. This included more professional imagery, detailed case studies, and emphasising his unique approach to copywriting.

He Communicated Clearly: He made sure to communicate the value of his services to potential clients. This included explaining the benefits of investing in high-quality copy and how it could positively impact their business.

As a result, not only did he attract more clients, but he also started attracting the right clients – those who valued his work and were willing to pay a fair price for it.

If you’re struggling to attract clients despite having a strong offering, it might be time to reassess your pricing. Conduct market research, communicate your value, and have confidence in what you bring to the table. Pricing yourself too low can do more harm than good, but with the right approach, you can find a balance that ensures sustainability and growth for your business.

Remember, your prices should reflect the quality and value of your services. Don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth – your business will thank you for it.
